Under the law of the sea, an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a sea zone over which a state has special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources.
Paul Watson, the captain of the Steve Irwin an Australian whaling patrol ship, estimates that at least 300 whales have been killed so far this season. The majority of these have been slaughtered inside the Australia's self-declared EEZ, an area for which it is predominantly responsible
Local councils are joining the battle, with Mosman urging residents to act. The mascot of the area is cartoon whale and a real whale, which is currently being sponsored by the suburb, is now in danger of being killed.
According to Captain Watson,
``Japan is given special dispensation because it is a big economic bully and does what it wants."
I assume that this may be part of the problem as it would be relatively easy to place importing restrictions on Japanese goods, or urge the public to stop using Japanese products.
I would miss my sushi but personally think that its worth it.
