The Arctic Sea is Thinning
July 16th 2009 13:26
According to new satellite photos from NASA, the Artic Sea ice sheath is thinning even more. This time around, the time frame between satellite reports have only been 4 years, but the change in the thickness is dramatic.
The ice sheath is important to the environment because it gives researchers an idea of how fast global warming is occurring. The ice sheaths are also important because the rate of melt affects the salinity of the ocean waters. Too much water and not enough salt could make for some very harsh weather conditions and environmental changes.
Hollywood has produced several movies about the condition of the ice sheaths at the Arctic Sea, but none have been taken seriously until now. At the current rate of melt, the thin ice will soon take over the thicker ice and that thin ice will melt even faster year after year.
