Christmas Consumerism
December 1st 2006 23:24
So, It's December 1st, and for most of us in western culture, Christmas is on the mind.
Whether or not one is religious, most people participate in the accepted tradition of exchanging gifts.
As nice of a gesture as this is, the rampant wasteful consumerism that takes place during this season takes a toll on Mama Earth. Packaging, Wrapping, Wasteful Materials, Shipping of goods, Supporting Big Corporations are all culprits sabotaging the planets health.
Try some different approaches to gift giving this year.
Buy Local: Support local businesses that make things in your area, which cuts down on wasteful transportation of goods.
Buy Sustainable: Support Businesses that sell goods and services that don't harm the Earth and/or Help the Earth. Buy Recycled products or things made from sustainable materials.
Buy Gift Certificates: From Local companies, Local restaurants, and Conscious Businesses On-Line. A small, wonderful gift that requires very little resources and wrapping. Better yet, find a conscious business that uses recycled paper for their gift certificates.
