Clean Water for all
October 10th 2006 20:50
Clean Water... It's a huge issue. How are we going keep water safe for use for billions of people...
Here on our island of Maui, In a town called Paia, they were trying to tap a well that has been poisoned by the agricutural toxins of the sugar cane industry(which is still here, and still being burned to harvest...but that's another story.)
"They" were trying to tell us that with treatment , the water would be safe for use and consumption. Luckily the County shut down the idea, but the mayor is still trying to get it to go through.
The silly part is that there is rampant Development on Maui (As you can imagine) and none of these development planners can tell us where the clean water can come from, to support these newcomers to the island, let alone the lowly existing residents.
It's the same old story everywhere, folks. Even here in Paradise, Big money overrules any inkling of "Smart Growth."
The indiginous people of this land knew about taking care of the land, and it takes care of you, and that is the harmonious cycle. The ancient Hawaiians Knew to Malama(Care For) the Aina (Land). And they suppoted hundreds of thousands of people in this small area, for centuries.
We need to learn from these simple, natural, wonderful wisdom of the indiginous people everywhere.
Here in Hawaii, it is happening, slowly but surely, a Renaissance of the culture and the "old" ways. I love it! And we each can speed up the process of change by speaking out. So, I'm off to write some letters to the newspapers!

Bad Habit Blog
What a blog for a cause you got here!
I used to be in a volunteer group teaching kids how to conserve water and other stuff to help the environment.
Too bad I became too busy.
Good luck with this endeavor of yours.

The water cannot be swum in most of the year - because pesticide run off from fields, household sewage & poorly recycled water goes into the rivers, & then, naturally into the sea.
Paradise outside my window - & I cannot swim in it.
Yet there's ever more building & 'development'.
Crazy, this mad capitalizm out of control, yeah?
Thanks for your blog - the more we notice the problem, the more effectively we can address the issue.
Your blog's a good step in the right direction, Angie-kins! Keep up the righteous work!
