Coming home to nature

October 25th 2006 22:59
Olinda, Maui
Living in the woods.

We just got a new house in Olinda, Maui. It's upcountry at 3300 Feet- elevation, and it's in a eucalyptus forest. We are very surrounded by nature... the nearest town is 4 1/2 miles down the hill. It is so incredibly quiet at night. I have always dreamed of living somewhere peaceful and out in nature-close to the land. It will be an experience of self-discovery being so secluded at home.

But I was just thinking about how I might be a little uncomfortable being at home alone until I get used to it. It's amazing how accustomed we become to noise and having a lot of people around. And I think all those horror movies I watched as kid didn't help either! You know, the typical senario, girl at home by herself at night and then the phone rings, and oh my god, It's the psycho stalker....Um, you get the picture. My point is that fear has been drilled into our heads through hollywood, and sensational news programs. Fear or discomfort of being in nature
And with all it's noise and busy-ness, modern day society does not really support a life lived in a natural manner. So, take it upon yourselves to reconnect with nature.
Go for a hike, find a quiet place to camp, swim in a lake, river, ocean.
Spend some time with yourself and mother nature, you will see your worries shrink insize and your tensions dwindle!

And I'll keep you posted on how I am doing with too much nature on my hands!
