Give the Environment a Hand-cut

November 13th 2007 23:29
Feel like a celebrity in sexy, one-off designs that won't blow the budget and help the environment at the same time.

Tucked away in the heart of Crows Nest lies a diamond in the rough. Handcut is a fabulous clothing store which stocks innovative, one-of-a-kind designs for women & men.

How it works is they handpick quality vintage clothing, deconstruct them and then craft them to be reborn as a one-off original.

Every garment is made from 100% vintage fabrics or sustainable fabrics which are transformed into creative and uplifting designs. By recreating these fashion items, handcut is saving the environment by recycling some of the world’s best fabrics and as a result uses less energy and water.

Check out the great designs on their site handcuts

Eco Car rentals

April 9th 2007 07:54
There are now companies that rent hybrid cars or cars that run on natural gas or biodiesel.
In America one company is called EV Rentals and has locations in California, Arizona, and Nevada. In my home town of Maui, Hawaii, we have Bio Beetle car rental
They get the same Bio diesel I use in my VW Jetta from Pacific Biodiesel, and they are also in Los Angeles as well as soon to be on the big island of Hawaii.
Check around on the internet for one in your favorite destination. Happy Travels!

Good searching

April 4th 2007 07:20
Just found this cool new search engine called GOODSEARCH
They donate a penny to your charity of choice each time you search! There is a bar where you can add your charity and verify if it's in their database, then search away!
I change my charity about every month because I have so many favorite causes

Even Sponges!

January 21st 2007 01:22
When I needed a new sponge which I used to buy at Costco in big packs, I decided to take a look at the health food store for a more conscious product, and YES they do make a more eco-friendly sponge! It is made with 50% recycled cellulose content. They really make so many things environmentally friendly these days. The health food store is a wonderful resource for many non food items that are more sustainable. Visit your local Natural foods store for Cleaning products, Hygeine and Beauty Products, even Clothes!
If they don't have something you need ask a clerk and they can probably reccomend a website give you a company to call. Take Advantage!

Walmart...Sustainable?

December 25th 2006 01:58
I never thought I would see those two words in the same sentence! A few years back I made a vow not to ever shop at this international corporate giants' chain, just about the same time one showed up in my home town.
They are notorious for bad business practices, treating their employees terribly and stocking poorly made sweat shop produced items.
Well I just read about a gathering that was recently held called the Walmart Sustainability Milestone Meeting. That blew my mind! The article is at: Seventh Generation: Non Toxic times Newsletter

Boulder, Colorado

December 19th 2006 21:33
I just got home from a trip to Boulder, Colorado, which is a hub of eco-friendliness.
Many people in Boulder walk, ride their bike, or the bus. There are many Organic farms around Boulder, and many choices for conscious eating in town.
Another thing I love is that many places have compostable(bio-degradable) take-out food supplies:forks, spoons and containers

Holistic Dentistry

December 7th 2006 22:12
So, I haven't been to the dentist in over three years. I know I need X-rays, and some work done, but I just can't bring myself to go and purposely subject myself to more radiation. Like I'm not getting enough using this computer, using the cell phone, etc.
Just a few years ago, I started hearing about Holistic dentists. I thought to myself "what's this? Do they give us herbs instead of anethesia or something? " But actually what these dentists are known for is using Digital Imaging X-rays. Costs more for them, but so much better for us and the planet! Much less radiation to the patient, and the processing of the images doesn't use the toxic materials that convential X-rays do. So it's eco-friendly!
Also, more conscious dentists sell great products for a healthy mouth. Dental Herb Company makes great toothpaste and mouthwash that your dentist must order for you

Organic Undies!

November 28th 2006 21:24

Yes, in my journey to buy everything consciously, I stumbled across the question, "What do I do when I need new panties?"
I'm not into buying used undies, so where do I buy new undies I can feel good about

SAVE THE CHILDREN

November 27th 2006 23:53
Many of my friends are having babies, and with so many babies around, I think about the world they will live in and what kind of options they will have.
I am optimistic and hopeful because of all the wonderful choices there are available today in environmentally friendly and healthy, non-toxic purchases. I'm thinking it can only get better. Conscious consumerism is becoming more and more popular, and sustainable is the buzzword.
We can start wherever we are, with protecting ourselves and the planet, to giving infants the cleanest, purest household possible, to teaching the teenagers to walk the talk and take care of the earth and our bodies

Is there enough bio-diesel?

November 21st 2006 02:45
I've been getting questions about using Bio-diesel and veggie oil for car fuel. The question is if there is enough veggies to go around to eat and to put in our cars. Well, to clarify, the biodiesel stations at the moment, use recyled deep fat fryer grease and change it into usable fuels. So this is a purely recycled waste product. Right now, my local Biodiesel station isn't using ALL the grease on the island, and if it would, I don't think there would be enough for everyone on the island. BUT, if you look at my post a few days ago on Cane Burning I present an idea of replacing the sugar cane(which is an economical drain) on this island with soybean or some other veggie that can then be turned into fuel. There are many, many acres of cane, and there could be enough to get this whole island self-sustainable.

At present they burn the cane, which sends brown smoke all over the island, and causes many health problems. My boyfriend works in an non-airconditioned kitchen on the bottom floor where the smoke happen to blow right into. It's not fair that he and his co-workers have to be subjected to this pollutant while at work because the government subsidizes this archaic practice of burning the cane to harvest
