Is there enough bio-diesel?

November 21st 2006 02:45
I've been getting questions about using Bio-diesel and veggie oil for car fuel. The question is if there is enough veggies to go around to eat and to put in our cars. Well, to clarify, the biodiesel stations at the moment, use recyled deep fat fryer grease and change it into usable fuels. So this is a purely recycled waste product. Right now, my local Biodiesel station isn't using ALL the grease on the island, and if it would, I don't think there would be enough for everyone on the island. BUT, if you look at my post a few days ago on Cane Burning I present an idea of replacing the sugar cane(which is an economical drain) on this island with soybean or some other veggie that can then be turned into fuel. There are many, many acres of cane, and there could be enough to get this whole island self-sustainable.

At present they burn the cane, which sends brown smoke all over the island, and causes many health problems. My boyfriend works in an non-airconditioned kitchen on the bottom floor where the smoke happen to blow right into. It's not fair that he and his co-workers have to be subjected to this pollutant while at work because the government subsidizes this archaic practice of burning the cane to harvest.

So, I think this type of thing could happen everywhere, every community has it's blight, acreage that is being subsidized by the government and that the locals would rather see go, that could be growing fuel crops.
It's all about better managment. It's the same with the food issue, there is most definitly enough food on this planet to feed every single human. We just have terrible leaders and improper distribution.
It is up to us as individuals to make choices in our lives that leave a lighter footprint on this earth.

Chemicals in your Bed?

November 20th 2006 02:16
I am trying to buy a new bed, and it is a scary thing. I am learning that beds are filled with toxic Polyeurethane and other materials that "off-gas", which means that you are exposed to dangerous fumes for the first few years you own the new bed. And then because of the flammable nature of these materials, they are sprayed with really toxic fire retardants!
Going to sleep is risky business with these beds!
Luckily, there are many alterternatives available online today.
Northern Naturals
Crane and Turtle

Rawganique

They offer beds made completly with organic cotton, or all natural wool, or recycled poly-fiber. These materials are naturally less flammable, so no toxic fire-retardants, and since these are chemical free substances, no off-gassing!
These beds are more expensive, but I personally think my health is worth it. Have you heard the term, "richest guy in the graveyard' ?
We modern day humans have so many pollutants to contend with in this world, we don't need them in our bedroom!

Aphrodesia Rocks!

November 12th 2006 02:37
Today I'd like to sing the praises of another super-conscious music band Aphrodesia
They music is fun and funky, with a ska edge, and the lead singer has trained in African singing. They have a wonderfully smooth sound, blending many cultures. They have ultra conscious lyrics in english and african, AND they tour in a biodiesel bus! That's right, they cruise the country using mostly Veggie oil!
They have a great page on their website explaining the process and there are link on how to convert your car to the mighty Vegetable oil!
I highly recommend their ultra cool eco-hip vibes.

Movin and Shakin

October 26th 2006 21:36
There was a 6.7 earthquake here in Hawaii, a week and a half ago. It really shook the whole island up, everyone I know felt it. Maui hasn't felt a tremor like that in a long time. No deaths were reported, but reports of structural damage are trickling in from small towns that are close to the epicenter. There are two rural towns that have been separated from each other because the only access bridge is not usable.
When these things happen, it really reminds us that mother nature is in charge!
These natural events are happening all over the place, "shaking up" our society

Micheal Franti-inspiring love

October 21st 2006 22:21
I promised my readers more on Consciously hip music, and for today's post I'd like to salute Micheal Franti. He is an amazing performance artist, and all of his songs have something important to say... one of his mottos is "Power to the Peaceful".
His shows are interactive and intimate, no matter how big the audience, you leave feeling like he is your personal friend.
In his upbeat yet strong lyrics, he urges us to stand up for our freedom, and reminds us to love one another, while inspiring us to have a lot of fun
