Sandals from old tires have been a tradition in South Africa, Latin America and the Sub-Sahara for generations.
But in 1995, two 25-year old entrepreneurs transformed the sandals from traditional to trendy. They created a sandal-making business to give residents in a poor section of Nairobi an opportunity to support themselves.
In 2000, Matt Meyer, the American entrepreneur, set up a website and offered the sandals to 500 of his friends and relatives in the U.S. Demand grew and so did the business. Now the Nairobi factory has 27 sandal makers.
The sandals, available in 11 styles, are made from used tires, glue, leather and thread.
