eco travel
October 13th 2006 21:02
There are so many ways to travel folks, we don't need to get stuck on the same routine of wasteful travel year after year, ridiculously un-eco Hotels, gas guzzling car rentals, and throwing your body off balance eating too much indulgent foods.
That's fun too of course! But, doing something different can be as rejuvenating for the soul as lying on the beach for weeks.. Which, believe me I love to do ; )
We had a very different and enriching experience in Germany this summer, and it saved us tons of money. In Europe, this is Needed!
We stayed at a vegetarian retreat center in the south of Germany,
and did a work trade for a month. It is a fantastic little Wellness
institution in the south of the Black forest. They specialize in
many health programs, one of them being fasting and hiking. I
really admire the bravery of the guests who were hiking 8-10 miles
a day while abstaining from eating!
We worked about 4 hours, five days a week in exchange for three
vegetarians meals daily and an amazing room with a breathtaking
view of the swiss alps. They have been operating since the 60's and
are a real pioneer in Germany. To be a vegetarian back then in the
land of Bratwurst and Wiener Schnitzel was probably not so easy!
At the end of the stay we made them a totally vegan "hawaiian"
pacific-rim type spread.
We made: Pineapple fried rice,
Stir fried vegetables with roasted cashew nuts,
Tofu seaweed salad,
Mixed greens and Citrus ginger dressing,
and Banana macadamia nut bread. (We blinked and this bread was
gone!)
and then I did an improtu Hula class at the end of lunch!
We made many friends and promises to return someday...
