Sustainability

October 31st 2006 08:41
We can get so depressed about the state of the world, because it's well, depressing! How disconnected people are from a natural way of living, How our consumerism directly and indirecting causes injustice in the world, and how dependant we are on corrupt corporations, It's enough to get any conscious individual frustrated.
But there are so many amazing positive things happening, moving humans in the direction of self-sustainabilty.
There is so much to learn in the world of sustainability. The internet is a wonderful way to find amazing classes and courses. One of my dreams is to take the permaculture design course at Ecoversity in Santa fe, New Mexico.

Check 'em out: Ecoversity/LINK]
They have workshops on Natural building, Permaculture, even Beekeeping!
Don't let the world get you down, you can be proactive. We can change the planet's fate by individually learning to be independant and live in harmony with the flow of nature.

Genetically Modified Organisms on Maui

just pineapple?

Okay folks, today I will embark in the touchy topic of GMO's. It is a big issue here in Hawaii. Due to our year-round nice weather, the big Bio-tech corporations love to do their GMO testing here. They have been doing it for years and are very secretive about. I grew up on the edge of my town right next to a field where they test GMO corn and I never knew about it. Until recently, not too many of the locals here were privy to these facts.

These Genetically Modified Organisms are grown in open air fields where their pollen can travel away on the wind contaminating other plants. A big problem right now is the fact that any organic farms on the island are in danger of being exposed to this floating GM pollen threatening their organic certification. One crop that is attracting attention is our Papayas. It is said that about half of all our organic papaya on the island that has been retested for organic certification is now not considered organic because it has been infiltrated by this GM pollen.
And because the Bio-tech companies aren't being made to disclose their whereabouts and activities, they aren't held liable for the losses of these organic farms. The farms are suffering the consequences without compensation.
I am not sure what they are testing for, but seeing as how there haven't been any Environmental Impact Statements for these fields, and there aren't any solid facts on GMO's being safe for consumption, I don't think is worth the risk.
To get the facts, go to GMO Free Hawaii
or the international website at: GMO Free Europe

Progressive Europe- Part 2

train station in Amsterdam
A cold place, but an eco-smart place

So, today I'd like to talk about their Garbage cans, or more precisely what's next to their garbage cans. At many Train Stations, in many countries in Europe, recycling bins are attached to their regular garbage cans. Three diffrent categories, I think they were glass, cardboard, and newspaper. What a concept, to let recycling be in the society's consciousness like that.
Also, In Germany, every home has a receptacle for compost. The government actually comes to pick up compost! Living in Hawaii, where the government doesn't even pick up newspaper, this was amazing to me.
Imagine how many tons of trash is being diverted from their landfills!

Stay tuned for Part 3...

Yes, It's a parking garage for bikes!

This is the first part of a series of posts describing some of the things other countries can learn from the European Union. I am talking about Europe because I just went there, and I saw many environmentally sound things in thier lives that I think other places (specifically America) could stand to adopt

Recycled Toothbrushes

October 20th 2006 21:39
One way to be proactively loving the earth is to be informed about all the eco-smart products out there! There really are so many amazing websites selling wonderful Eco-hip products that are great alternatives to all the junk that is bought day-in and day-out. My favorite new discovery is the Recycline Toothbrush. It is made from recycled yogurt cups!!! Dentists now recommend changing your toothbrush every 1-3 months. I started to buy packs of 6 toothbrushes from the big box stores to adhere to this philosophy, and threw the old brushes out every time. What a waste! Now I buy these recycled toothbrushes, and you can send them back to the company for them to recycle again! Now, that's what I call responsible capitalism! Have you heard of "Cradle to the Grave"? This is the concept of a company taking responsibility of their products from conception to the death and removal (mostly recycling) of the product. How cool is that?!? Some companies in Europe have adopted this program into their businesses. I hope this country and others follows suit! Recycline also makes recycled plastic razors, plates, forks and spoons. Worth fighting for

San Sebastian, Spain
Fun day at the beach
There are so many awesome things mama earth provides us with, all natural swimming pools, Ocean waves for surfing and playing, Forests to wander around in, and countless other activities for our enjoyment. How do we protect these precious resources, from corporations, governments and developers?
Well, awareness is the first step. and then we learn how we can avoid being a part of the problem!
Don't support companies that are known for their earth thrashing tendencies

Yes, the next generation, what will they have to work with? ... Much more than us, that's for certain. It's like that song, What a wonderful world. Something about when babies are grown, They'll know much more than we know

Eco Surfing

Party Wave!

Surfing is so big here in Hawaii. Even with the visitors that come all year. When one goes to a place that has warm ocean year-round, naturally one would wish to get in on the STOKE! And one would sign up for a day in Surf school! But, boy is it getting crowded. When we are out surfing and there is one too many schools in the line up it can be dangerous, and if those visitors have been given booties and have been told to walk on the reef, it is dangerous for them and the reef. In fact, it is extremely detrimental to the reef! And anything detrimental to our reef is detrimental to our surfing!
Now I know not every casual beach goer has formal Oceanography training, so to simply explain: It is because of the reef that we have waves. Particularly in Hawaii, we are mostly reef break. Soooo, If we want endless surf to play in, we must take care of mama ocean and all her inhabitants. (Yup, that coral reef is a living creature!) Again, that concept in environmentalism, Take care of it, and it will take care of you! Pretty Easy, Right
