A whale of a time

January 14th 2008 01:51
Under the law of the sea, an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a sea zone over which a state has special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources.

Paul Watson, the captain of the Steve Irwin an Australian whaling patrol ship, estimates that at least 300 whales have been killed so far this season. The majority of these have been slaughtered inside the Australia's self-declared EEZ, an area for which it is predominantly responsible

Local councils are joining the battle, with Mosman urging residents to act. The mascot of the area is cartoon whale and a real whale, which is currently being sponsored by the suburb, is now in danger of being killed.

According to Captain Watson,
``Japan is given special dispensation because it is a big economic bully and does what it wants."

I assume that this may be part of the problem as it would be relatively easy to place importing restrictions on Japanese goods, or urge the public to stop using Japanese products.

I would miss my sushi but personally think that its worth it.

ECO-FATIGUE

November 22nd 2007 01:02
“Enough already!” is what you’ll increasingly hear from consumers around the world when faced with yet another corporate ‘eco’ vision or must-buy green product.

Trend researching site trendwatching.com has discovered that society is increasingly suffering from ECO-FATIGUE. It is argues that consumers are fed up with being told what to do and what not to do and are sick of being treated like infants by Al Gore and the like.

The ECO-FATIGUED increasingly rebel against the green movement, exemplified in the outcry following the launch of the Hybrid Porche Cayenne. Many felt that the fast, smooth, penis extention is becoming a mere battery-operated, neutered shadow of its former self.

The result was an online petition demanding that Porsche stop selling its eco-friendlier varieties. The site, therealcayenne.net, clocked more than 3,000 visits in its first few days, before being shut down for legal reasons.

Founder of the webite, John Whitaker, is extremely concerned as "now we also have to deal with the insecurity of being seen as 'hybrid drivers', as the public won't be able to tell the difference between a hybrid Cayenne and the real thing" he says.

The time is coming near where a new subculture of carbon loving, fuel gizzling, tireless consumers will congregate so be sure to shut them down whenever you can

BAMBOO BANGER

November 21st 2007 00:21
Come to a party to raise money and awareness for the Borneo Rainforest & its species.

So, it sucks to be an orangutan right now. What's left of the Borneo rainforest is the only natural habitat for the endangered Bornean Orangutan. There are less than 20,000 left in existence. Experts believe we could witness their extinction in the wild in as few as 10 years.

The rainforests are the lifeblood of the area but today roads cross much of Borneo's remote interior. The government are corruptly still allowing these areas to be logged and locals watch helplessly as loaded trucks drive out of the "protected" environment every day.

Poor concession management, slash and burn agriculture, illegal logging and the massive expansion of palm oil plantations have all contributed to a decreasing rainforest habitat.

Dutch scientist Dr Willie Smits founded the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (B.O.S.) in 1991 to raise funds and to help educate local people on issues vital to the survival of orangutans and the forest ecosystems. By protecting orangutans in their natural environment, other native species, including plants and insects will also survive.

On December 5, the guys and gals behind some of Sydney's coolest club nights will join forces to present a hot party to kick off the summer ... BAMBOO BANGER. Raising money, raising awareness and raising the roof! Each person through the door is 3 square metres of Borneo Rainforest protected from illegal logging on behalf of B.O.S!

Taking to the stage on the night are our eco friendly mates who will definitely give you something to dance about. Come along, have a boogy and save an ape!

Tickets are for sale now at moshtix

Aphrodesia
Rocking us at the Crestone Music Festival

Aphrodesia was metioned last week in this blog, and here is a picture of them at the Crestone Music Festival in Colorado. They were so Awesome, and they rolled up in their tour bus powered by Veggie oil! They cruise all over the west coast in this veggie fueled machine. The message in their conscious music is inspiring, and the message they spread rolling in a Vegetable oil consuming bus is Clear! THERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO LIVE!

Hawaiian Monk Seals

Hawaiian monk Seal
He's just sleeping

The Hawaiian Monk Seal is an endangered species, endemic to Hawaii. It comes on shore to rest and sleep. This is an occasional occurance where the seal will bring itself onto the sand of some beach or surf break and make itself comfortable. The Department of Natural Resources is usually notified, and they come down to the beach to put some yellow tape around the seal's area, so it won't be disturbed. They do have a tendency to bark or bite if one gets too close while it is sleeping (like some humans I know!).
Some have the wisdom to find an unused spot of shoreline to rest upon, but since there isn't much unused shoreline left, they usually end up in public

Cane Burning

November 14th 2006 22:07
Brown Clouds floated along the beautiful Maui sky for the past few days. Why? Because Maui is one of the few places in the world that still burns their Sugar Cane to harvest it!
Can you believe it? Not only does the cane burn in this archaic practice, but also the PVC piping and plastic that is used in growing the cane. That sounds wonderfully healthy for the locals here, doesn't it? And what about the thousands of tourists that come here annually. They plan wonderful sightseeing days, such as taking a boat out to go snorkeling or whale watching, only to have a brownish-black plume of smoke come rolling over the ocean, along with a foul burning smell. As tourism is our biggest economy, you'd think the government would help fund the sugar corporation to find another way to harvest. Or abolish the whole operation, since it is government subsidized and doesn't even make enough money for itself!
The big argument for the cane to stay among the locals, is that all the cane fields would be developed. Why can't we think bigger than this

Sustainability

October 31st 2006 08:41
We can get so depressed about the state of the world, because it's well, depressing! How disconnected people are from a natural way of living, How our consumerism directly and indirecting causes injustice in the world, and how dependant we are on corrupt corporations, It's enough to get any conscious individual frustrated.
But there are so many amazing positive things happening, moving humans in the direction of self-sustainabilty.
There is so much to learn in the world of sustainability. The internet is a wonderful way to find amazing classes and courses. One of my dreams is to take the permaculture design course at Ecoversity in Santa fe, New Mexico

Genetically Modified Organisms on Maui

Pineapple clip art
just pineapple?

Okay folks, today I will embark in the touchy topic of GMO's. It is a big issue here in Hawaii. Due to our year-round nice weather, the big Bio-tech corporations love to do their GMO testing here. They have been doing it for years and are very secretive about. I grew up on the edge of my town right next to a field where they test GMO corn and I never knew about it. Until recently, not too many of the locals here were privy to these facts

Progressive Europe- Part 2

train station in Amsterdam
A cold place, but an eco-smart place

So, today I'd like to talk about their Garbage cans, or more precisely what's next to their garbage cans. At many Train Stations, in many countries in Europe, recycling bins are attached to their regular garbage cans. Three diffrent categories, I think they were glass, cardboard, and newspaper. What a concept, to let recycling be in the society's consciousness like that

Yes, It's a parking garage for bikes!

This is the first part of a series of posts describing some of the things other countries can learn from the European Union. I am talking about Europe because I just went there, and I saw many environmentally sound things in thier lives that I think other places (specifically America) could stand to adopt

Recycled Toothbrushes

October 20th 2006 21:39
One way to be proactively loving the earth is to be informed about all the eco-smart products out there! There really are so many amazing websites selling wonderful Eco-hip products that are great alternatives to all the junk that is bought day-in and day-out. My favorite new discovery is the Recycline Toothbrush. It is made from recycled yogurt cups!!! Dentists now recommend changing your toothbrush every 1-3 months. I started to buy packs of 6 toothbrushes from the big box stores to adhere to this philosophy, and threw the old brushes out every time. What a waste! Now I buy these recycled toothbrushes, and you can send them back to the company for them to recycle again! Now, that's what I call responsible capitalism! Have you heard of "Cradle to the Grave"? This is the concept of a company taking responsibility of their products from conception to the death and removal (mostly recycling) of the product. How cool is that?!? Some companies in Europe have adopted this program into their businesses. I hope this country and others follows suit! Recycline also makes recycled plastic razors, plates, forks and spoons.
