Genetically Modified Organisms on Maui

just pineapple?

Okay folks, today I will embark in the touchy topic of GMO's. It is a big issue here in Hawaii. Due to our year-round nice weather, the big Bio-tech corporations love to do their GMO testing here. They have been doing it for years and are very secretive about. I grew up on the edge of my town right next to a field where they test GMO corn and I never knew about it. Until recently, not too many of the locals here were privy to these facts.

These Genetically Modified Organisms are grown in open air fields where their pollen can travel away on the wind contaminating other plants. A big problem right now is the fact that any organic farms on the island are in danger of being exposed to this floating GM pollen threatening their organic certification. One crop that is attracting attention is our Papayas. It is said that about half of all our organic papaya on the island that has been retested for organic certification is now not considered organic because it has been infiltrated by this GM pollen.
And because the Bio-tech companies aren't being made to disclose their whereabouts and activities, they aren't held liable for the losses of these organic farms. The farms are suffering the consequences without compensation.
I am not sure what they are testing for, but seeing as how there haven't been any Environmental Impact Statements for these fields, and there aren't any solid facts on GMO's being safe for consumption, I don't think is worth the risk.

Angelika,

Thanks for writing about this. It's such a serious topic. The bio-tech companies have the right to sue a farmer for growing plants with their patented DNA, even if the pollen blew into the farmer's field. But without full disclosure, how can we keep them far enough away from our fields to keep the next year's seeds clean? It's frustrating.

I'm glad you share my frustration. It's as if, sometimes the justice system is reversed, working for the big guy's warped world, instead of protecting the little guy.
Well, we must stay optimistic. We must Vote with our dollar, and not support Monsanto and other bio-tech giants.
Thanks for your comment.
