Hawaiian Monk Seals
November 15th 2006 23:04
The Hawaiian Monk Seal is an endangered species, endemic to Hawaii. It comes on shore to rest and sleep. This is an occasional occurance where the seal will bring itself onto the sand of some beach or surf break and make itself comfortable. The Department of Natural Resources is usually notified, and they come down to the beach to put some yellow tape around the seal's area, so it won't be disturbed. They do have a tendency to bark or bite if one gets too close while it is sleeping (like some humans I know!).
Some seals have the sense of humor to plunk themselves down right in front of the only spot to get out to a surf break or right in front of a walkway!
Wherever they plant themselves to chill out, I think these cute animals are a reminder about our many friends in the sea and to take care of the vast landscape that is the ocean. We humans must learn not to use the Sea as a garbage can or experimental ground.
Then we will have more and more of these wonderful marine animal sightings.
