Fish Can Contain Mercury
Fish Can Contain Mercury

A recent study of more than 250 streams across the United States revealed that every fish tested was contaminated with mercury according to the Environmental News Network. While fish mercury contamination is not a new finding, more than 25% of the total fish studied showed levels of mercury beyond that of acceptable levels for human consumption.

How Does Mercury Affect the Body?

When mercury is consumed in large amounts, the nervous system can be affected. Mercury, or methyl mercury which is more common in fish, concentrates in the organs of the body and sits around until the levels are high enough to cause harm to the human.

There have been cases of mercury poisoning that cause severe physical defects in newborns and a degradation of the nervous system. In China, for instance, 27 million tons of mercury was poured into the waters of the Minamata Bay. The people soon began suffering from degeneration of the muscle and shaking. The newborns were born with severe birth defects.

The same effects occurred in Iraq in the 1970s. Mercury poisoning occurred when grains that were treated with a mercury based fungicide were eaten by humans. A large number of people died as a result of the poisoning.

Can We Stop the Mercury Increase?

Yes, humans can stop the increase of mercury in fish by decreasing the amount of mercury in the stream waters. According to researchers, the water is the source of the mercury in the fish. The more mercury in the water, the higher concentration of mercury in the fish.

There is no way to remove the mercury from the fish once it is contaminated. At present, there are no tests for mercury that fish must undergo before hitting grocery store shelves though there are machines that can test the level of mercury in the fish to inform the consumer of the mercury level.

We Have Tomatoes!

May 30th 2009 01:50
The gardening season is upon us and I love to grow my own vegetables. Not only does this decrease my carbon footprint on the Earth, but the tomatoes taste awfully good. This year I decided to gather up some old gunny sacs and use them as hanging planters. The process worked great, but the real key is the vermicompost I created.

What is Vermicompost?

Basically, in flat out terms, it is worm poo. The worms eat the food you give them and they digest it and poo out the best fertilizer on earth. This is great way to use up alot of those old table scraps.

You may be wondering how to make a worm poo bin that enables you to recycle that old food and come out with pure, golden love. I recently found the perfect article to answer your question - How to Make a Worm Composite Bin.

Once you have the bin, make sure to only feed the worms the things they like. Cardboard is wonderful, but dairy is bad. You will love the results and the loving tomatoes you can grow in record time.

Sorry not interested i'm a Vegan-Sexual

November 13th 2007 23:45
A new phenomenon in New Zealand is taking the idea of you are what you eat to the extreme.

Vegan-sexuals are people who do not eat any meat or animal products, and who choose not to be sexually intimate with non-vegan partners whose bodies, they say, are made up of dead animals.

Many female respondents described being attracted to people who ate meat, but said they did not want to have sex with meat-eaters because their bodies were made up of animal carcasses.

Many live by the philosophy that “You are what you eat" and are nauseated by the thought of being intimate with those who are not vegan. Some have even described "carnivores" bodies as graveyards for dead animals.

Is it just me or is it getting harder and harder to get laid these days?
