Progressive Europe- Part 1
October 22nd 2006 20:52
This is the first part of a series of posts describing some of the things other countries can learn from the European Union. I am talking about Europe because I just went there, and I saw many environmentally sound things in thier lives that I think other places (specifically America) could stand to adopt.
These pictures are of the "Parking garage" next to the train station. Upon examination, you will notice that there isn't a single car in the whole building. Only Bikes!
There are these small side streets next to the canals and the cars are allowed on them, but they are mostly used as bike paths. Our favorite image is of a smartly dressed business lady, talking into her cell phone as she rode along on her bike, presumably going to work!
So, bike riding is the norm in this quaint little city, as it is in many European cities, but I do believe Amsterdam takes the grand prize with an entire parking garage for
bicycles : )
I think many communities in this world, could learn from Amsterdam, by making thier town centers more bike friendly, and designing or redesigning their infrastructure to make things closer and more accessible.
