Snakes and Worms and other Little things
November 7th 2007 02:57
Many of us wish that we could do more for the evironment but are limited by landlords who allow little to be done to a property. A couple who rent in Newtown, Todd and Gemma have decided to be as eco friendly as possible proving that "Little things by a lot of people can have more impact than big things by only a few".
They have made a number of small changes the first being a worm farm for their garden. Essentially food scraps are placed into a container with worms and they produce a by product of pH balanced castings (like a top grade potting mix) and pH balanced liquid fertilizer. There is no offensive odor, it takes up little room and it has proved a popular present for friends and family members.
Other steps they have taken include adding curtains between rooms to keep in the heat, buying $5 door snakes to prevent drafts, replacing blinds with curtains to stay warm and have swapped energy guzzling heaters for blankets, wheat bags and water bottles.
They are constantly thinking up new ways to be more environmentally friendly and are a great example of how you can be kinder to the environment with very little effort at all. Have a look at their blog at newtowncottage.com
