Eco Surfing

Ho'okipa wave
Party Wave!

Surfing is so big here in Hawaii. Even with the visitors that come all year. When one goes to a place that has warm ocean year-round, naturally one would wish to get in on the STOKE! And one would sign up for a day in Surf school! But, boy is it getting crowded. When we are out surfing and there is one too many schools in the line up it can be dangerous, and if those visitors have been given booties and have been told to walk on the reef, it is dangerous for them and the reef. In fact, it is extremely detrimental to the reef! And anything detrimental to our reef is detrimental to our surfing!

Now I know not every casual beach goer has formal Oceanography training, so to simply explain: It is because of the reef that we have waves. Particularly in Hawaii, we are mostly reef break. Soooo, If we want endless surf to play in, we must take care of mama ocean and all her inhabitants. (Yup, that coral reef is a living creature!) Again, that concept in environmentalism, Take care of it, and it will take care of you! Pretty Easy, Right?
So, Next time you re on an island holiday, and your out there learning to get your STOKE on, tell your surf insructor why you won't walk on the reef. Then you will be teaching them something too!
Thanks!
