Walmart...Sustainable?
December 25th 2006 01:58
I never thought I would see those two words in the same sentence! A few years back I made a vow not to ever shop at this international corporate giants' chain, just about the same time one showed up in my home town.
They are notorious for bad business practices, treating their employees terribly and stocking poorly made sweat shop produced items.
Well I just read about a gathering that was recently held called the Walmart Sustainability Milestone Meeting. That blew my mind! The article is at: Seventh Generation: Non Toxic times Newsletter
They mentioned selling better products like clothes made from Organic Cotton, and making them affordable to the general public. I think that could definitly be a good thing, since they have the buying power to make sustainable products more inexpensive.
The article mentioned that the Walmart "associates" (low level workers) have salary caps which prevent them from ever making more money. And most of them get paid close to minimum wage. The Management level workers do not have salary caps.
The Walmart CEO was reporting that sales are terrible right now. He admitted that in the past low sales would prompt them to send their associates home before 11 AM as a tactic to save money, and that they don't do that anymore. They seem to want to stick to good business practices and re-build their company on that.
I know many other americans who have vowed never to set foot in Walmart.
Like the author of the article, I'm not ready to hand in my vow, but I'm definitly paying them attention.
